Legendary Weed Smuggler and 'Mr Nice' Author Howard Marks Dies Aged 70

Notorious cannabis smuggler, cult author and all-round drug cult hero Howard Marks has passed away from cancer aged 70.

If only your life was tenth as interesting as his. Born in a small village in Wales, he grew to worldwide infamy building his own international cannabis smuggling operation. Eventually however, the man caught up with him and his was jailed in the US in 1990 (having previously being acquitted in London in 1980).

Upon his release, he turned his hand to writing, with his 1996 autobiography ‘Mr Nice’ becoming a staple of stoners’ bookshelves for two decades. He then became a cult figure, cameoing in films like Human Traffic and The Dirty Sanchez Movie, and even running for parliament in 1997 to promote cannabis legalisation. Rhys Ifans played him in the 2010 film adaptation of Mr Nice.

Last year in was announced that Marks had inoperable colon cancer, and he died peacefully in his sleep yesterday.
