Olivia Wilde shared an enlightening story about the preposterousness of Hollywood ageism during a recent appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show, revealing a curious alternative meaning for the word "sophisticated." Wilde, currently starring in Martin Scorsese’s Vinyl on HBO, first met the iconic director when auditioning for another one of his projects: The Wolf of Wall Street. Sadly, that audition had a baffling conclusion.
"The funniest thing I heard recently was, I heard that I was too sophisticated [for the part]," Wilde told Stern on Tuesday’s show. "I thought, 'Oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn’t get the part but I’m a very sophisticated person.'" However, Wilde later learned, the real reason had nothing to do with sophistication but everything to do with ageism. "I found out later they actually said old," Wilde, 32, told Stern's audience. "That was the one I was too old for."
Margot Robbie ultimately landed that Wolf of Wall Street role, a casting decision Wilde says worked out quite well. "I thought she kicked so much ass in that movie," Wilde said, later adding on Twitter that getting turned down for Wolf ultimately led to her "dream job" on Vinyl. "It shows that if you don't get something, it might lead to something else," Wilde insisted.
