The continued success of VH1's The Breaks, which premiered back in January to some network-best viewership, has given the adaptation of Dan Charnas' history-spanning book just the momentum it needs to be extended into a full-on TV series. VH1 confirmed the series order to the Hollywood Reporter, though an exact number of episodes has not been revealed.
While the involvement of originalThe Breaks stars Wood Harris, Method Man, Mack Wilds, Afton Williamson, David Call, and Antoine Harris remains unconfirmed, THR reports that "most" are expected to participate in the series. "The Breaks is VH1 at its best, intersecting '90s nostalgia with hip-hop for the masses," Chris McCarthy, VH1 General Manager, said in a statement. "Both the viewers and critics have spoken, and we couldn’t be happier to continue telling the story that has already connected with millions of pop culture fans."
Based on Charnas' wildly successful book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, VH1's The Breaks follows the story of three friends in 1990 New York City as they strive for financial and creative successes in a blooming hip-hop industry. The TV movie's premiere back in January generated a remarkable 2.6 million viewers, giving VH1 a 42 percent boost among TV watchers under the age of 50.
