'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' to Get an R-Rated Special Edition

Rated R for really violent.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn warned us about this. After the monstrous success of Deadpool, which might put more than $10 million in Ryan Reynolds' pockets, Warner Bros. is stepping into the R-rated superhero film game with a special edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, unlike Wade Wilson’s solo venture, this one won’t be for the big screen.

Colliderreports that Warner Home Video will release an alternate cut of the movie titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition, which earned itself an R rating for "sequences of violence." Given Hollywood’s innate ability to run something great into the ground, it’s not surprising that this trend of extremely violent comic book movies has started so soon. But as Gunn points out, the studios will miss the entire point of what made a film like Deadpool work so well.

"Over the next few months, if you pay attention to the trades, you'll see Hollywood misunderstanding the lesson they should be learning with Deadpool," he wrote in a lengthy Facebook post. "They'll be green lighting films 'like Deadpool' - but, by that, they won't mean 'good and original' but ‘a raunchy superhero film’ or ‘it breaks the fourth wall.’ They'll treat you like you're stupid, which is the one thing Deadpool didn't do."

Since Batman v Superman was pretty much wrapped by the time the film was released, we can assume that won’t happen here. As far the next ones to get the green light, however, the same can’t be said.
