Classes in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township have been canceled for Wednesday, as the community mourns the loss of brave and beloved educator Susan Jordan. Jordan, principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School near Indianapolis, was killed by a bus on Tuesday after narrowly saving the lives of two 10-year-old students, CNN reports.
"Susan was an amazing educator," a school board representative said in a statement. "She had a remarkable way of making everyone she came in contact with feel valued and important." Susan Jordan, 69, served as Beverland's principal for more than two decades and was described by local families as a "legend," according to the Indy Star. In May of 2015, students and faculty filmed a touching tribute video for Susan to honor her decades of service, revealing how much they cherished and deeply respected her contributions to the community:
Though local authorities are still investigating the bus crash, police have confirmed that the bus driver showed "no outward signs of impairment" at the scene. The two children rescued by Susan Jordan sustained non-life-threatening injuries but were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently listed in "serious but stable" condition.
"[Susan] had a passion for children that is unmatched," the school board representative added. "The entire Lawrence Township Community mourns her loss and extends our sympathy to the Amy Beverland Community [and] the multitudes of people whose lives she touched."
