Those of us who aren't still holding on to the idea that New Year's Eve is great already know its a horrible day filled with nagging nostalgia, promises to yourself that you'll shamefully break in a few days, and a cheap champagne hangover in the morning.

But now researchers have given us a new reason to hate it: New Year's Day is the day you're most likely to die.

The study analyzed death certificates in the U.S. since the 1970s and found that while the risk of death from all causes is higher in January, it's peak is on Jan. 1.

You get a sort of wave of death that ebbs in the late summer months, rises sharply through December, and hits a peak exactly on Jan. 1 before subsiding more gradually through the beginning of the year.

Happy New Year!
