George Lucas Set to Attend ‘The Force Awakens' Premiere

The father has returned.

George Lucas virtually “divorced” the franchise he created when he sold his company to Disney in 2012, but the prodigal father is returning to Star Wars—sort of.

He is set to attend the Los Angeles and London premieres for The Force Awakens. However, that doesn’t mean he’s back in. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, he’d have to take full control were he to step back over to the dark side.  "If there's one thing I've learned about George is it's that he's never, ever held back. Having him 100 percent on board is up to him and he can't do that unless he's running everything,” she toldThe Hollywood Reporter.

For now, Lucas is enjoying the ride and treating it like the amicable separation that it is. On watching The Force Awakens, he told the Washington Post: “I gotta go to the wedding. My ex will be there, my new wife will be there, but I’m going to have to take a very deep breath and be a good person and sit through it and just enjoy the moment, because it is what it is and it’s a conscious decision that I made."

The latest installment of Star Wars arrives in theaters on Dec. 18.
