When Charlie Sheenrevealed he was HIV-positive during an interview with Matt Lauer in November, the usual brand of Sheen controversy quickly took hold of the headlines. However, that approach missed an important aspect of Sheen’s announcement: the ability to raise awareness surrounding the need for increased focus on research aimed at finding better treatment options and, above all else, a cure.

Speaking with Radar, who apparently played an important role in Sheen’s decision to reveal his diagnosis after four years of keeping it under wraps, Sheen reiterated his dedication to finding that cure. "It was shortly afterwards — I think it was the second day — I said to my mom, 'This disease picked the wrong guy,'" Sheen says. "If anybody can fight this thing and discover a cure, it’s me. I will exhaust every resource available to me. I will sit with every expert. I will move forward until something’s revealed."

Sheen points to his high-profile career as a platform he now hopes to use to "finally deliver a message that truly matters," adding that he now believes that everything in his life was building up to this moment. "I’m gonna continue to meet with the top experts in the field and continue to surround myself with bigger brains than mine," Sheen continues. "I am in a rare position to turn my diagnosis into a positive…I’m talking to you and the National Enquirer so that I can reach your audience with my story and continue to shine a light on this disease while brilliant scientists continue to search for a cure."
