That ever elusive dream of blasting off into space? Not so far-fetched anymore. After ending its space shuttle program in 2011, NASA is getting back into the human spaceflight game (beyond the International Space Station) and they want you to send in your applications.
According to the organization's press release, there are 47 astronauts currently active and they’re going to need a lot more to man future missions to the space station and “destinations in deep space.” So, Mars?
In order to be eligible, applicants must have a “bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics.” Bonus points for an advanced degree. NASA is also looking for someone with at least three years of related, progressively responsible professional experience or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.” Do simulated flights count?
If you meet the requirements and think you can pass the intense physical exam, be sure to get that application in soon. The recruitment process is open Dec. 14 through mid-February. And in the off chance that you do get selected, you’ll have to keep it secret until mid-2017. That's when they plan to announce the newest members of the program. Good luck, recruits.
