The nominees for the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced on Tuesday, revealing strong campaign boosts for Beasts of No Nation, Carol, Tangerine, and others. With six total nominations each, Carol and Beasts of No Nation lead the pack of critical smashes that also includes Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind writer Charlie Kaufman’s increasingly buzzed about Anomalisa:

Tangerine, which goes head to head with Beasts and Carol in the Best Feature category, marks a potential breakthrough for groundbreaking stars Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki RodriguezBeasts of No Nation has enjoyed rave reviews for both director Cary Fukunaga and star Idris Elba, praise possibly eclipsed (or at least matched) by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s performances in Carol.
