10 Things You Didn't Know About Star Wars' John Boyega

From South London to a galaxy far, far away.

None

You might recognise John Boyega from his starring role in Attack The Block, the 2011 south-London-estate-kids-versus-aliens movie from a few years back. But if you don’t, you’re going to know him soon enough. The Peckham-born 23-year-old has build on that cult success, and in April last year it was confirmed he has a major part in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Boyega plays Finn, a Stormtrooper-turned-good, and it’s pretty sick to see the London streets being repped in the biggest film of the century.  He’s come a long way in just a few years, and he's going to go a lot further, so here are ten things you (probably) didn’t know about him.

He grew up on a council estate in Peckham

His first role was a leopard in a school play

He had theatre cred before ‘Attack the Block’

His dad was a preacher, and wanted him to be one too

He starred as a boxer in a Spike Lee HBO pilot that never got picked up

He was mad excited about trying American fast food

He’s got no time for haters

It’s great to see the casting of the new Star Wars movies being more diverse than there were in the 70s. But there’s always some idiot on the internet who’s going to complain about a Stormtrooper being black. How did Boyega respond? With the simple message on his Instagram: “To whom it may concern ... Get used to it”. He later elaborated in to V Magazine “I'm in the movie, what are you going to do about it? You either enjoy it or you don't. I'm not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of colour and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense.”

He’s big Marvel Comics and manga head

He does a voice in Major Lazer’s cartoon

An animated series based on Diplo’s dancehall side project debuted on Fox this year, with the titular character shooting things up in a future Jamaica and riffing on classic Saturday morning cartoons. Boyega lends his voice to Major Lazer’s hacker sidekick BLK MRKT, and thankfully keeps his London accent.

He cried when he read the script for The Force Awakens
