The New 'Ghost in the Shell' Film Will Be Written by the Man behind 'Straight Outta Compton'

'Straight Outta Compton' screenwriter to re-write live 'Ghost In The Shell Movie'

It seems like the success of the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton is becoming a launch pad for many of its cast and crew members.

Jonathan Herman, who co-wrote the film's screenplay, has been brought on board to re-write the script for Dreamwork's live-adaptation of the cult Manga classic Ghost In The Shell, which has already casted Scarlett Johansson in the lead roll. This comes alongside the recent news of SOC director F. Gary Gray being snapped up to direct Furious 8 and Corey Hawkins (who played Dr. Dre) currently starring in the new season of The Walking Dead.

We should do well to remember that live action movie adaptations of Japanese animes never work... like never ever. Need proof? Just watch the ‘Hollywood’ version of Dragon Ball Evolution, I promise you that all your childhood memories will be desecrated within the 85 minute runtime - and that’s assuming if you get that far. We could list a number of reasons why they never work (poor casting, not sticking to the source material, etc…) but we’d be here forever.

However, it does look like Dreamworks are on a mission to do the universally-loved anime, which inspired films like The Matrix trilogy, proper justice and not some half-arse job . The movie is still in pre-production but with ScarJo already on board and Snow White And The Huntsman's Rupert Sanders directing, the addition of Herman could mean we’re about to see a live-action anime that doesn’t make you want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon. Or it could turn out even worse than Dragon Ball Evolution – which would be an achievement in itself… who knows?
