A BBC investigation has found that the headquarters of Sports Direct has had to call for an ambulance 76 times in the last two years. Because offering sportswear that cheap is dangerous work, apparently. In all seriousness though, it has raised concerns about working conditions at the Sports Direct complex at Shirebrook, Derbyshire. Out of the 76 emergency calls made between January 2013 and December 2014, 36 cases were classed as "life-threatening". The BBC also report that staff are “too scared” to take sick leave in case they loose their jobs.

Reasons for the calls included chest pains, breathing problems, convulsions and strokes. Six were to do with car accidents, and one was because of a dog bite.

Unions have been critical of working conditions at the warehouse, and reported accidents have double in the last year. There have also been criticisms of strict rules for agency workers, who can apparently loose their jobs over offences such as “excessive chatting”, “excessive or long toilet breaks,” and “using a mobile phone in the warehouse”.
