Like a male stripper sent back through time to kill the leader of the human resistance before he ever puts on a g-string, Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL had something in common over the holiday weekend: weak box office results, according to the New York Times.
Terminator brought in $28.7 million over the weekend (and $44.2 million since opening Wednesday) to land in third place behind No. 2, Inside Out ($30.1 million) and No. 1, Jurassic World ($30.9 million). Magic Mike XXL had a weekend take of $12 million ($27.1 million since Wednesday) to land in fourth place and fall short of the original's opening weekend of $39.1 million.
Time will tell what this means for the Terminator franchise which had planned two more movies in 2017 and 2018. The latest film, which brought back Arnold Schwarzenegger, cost a reported $175 million to make and got terrible reviews. It's doing somewhat better overseas, though, where it made more than $80 million over the weekend.
Magic Mike is in much better shape since it only cost about $15 million to make and is already profitable.
Maybe it's enough with the sequels already? Ted 2 got off to a weak start a week earlier.
Of course, Jurassic World is a sequel, and that movie is killing it.
