Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's new action-disaster movie didn't impress scientists with its science (or reviewers with its movie), but it did put up impressive numbers at the box office.

The movie performed way above expectations (which were around $40 million) to haul in $53.2 million in its opening weekend to take the No. 1 spot, Variety reports.

The weekend's other big debut, Aloha, which also puzzled people, but for different reasons (Asian Emma Stone, anyone?), only made $10 million.

Nobody can argue that The Rock isn't box office gold. His last three movies, Hercules ($243 million worldwide), Furious 7 ($1.5 billion worldwide), and now San Andreas, prove that.  Rest assured, Johnson won't be giving up a film career to become a full-time wedding officiant anytime soon.

Pitch Perfect 2 was No. 3 with $14.8 million, followed by Tomorrowland with $13.8 million and Mad Max: Fury Road, which had $13.6 million.
