Pablo Escobar, known by many during his $30 billion reign as the King of Cocaine, still stands as one of the most infamous drug lords in history. In fact, Escobar's contagious popularity propelled him to a brief career in politics in his home country of Colombia. Finally, Escobar will be given the proper biopic treatment thanks to director Fernando Leon de Aranoa.

Based on Virginia Vallejo’s 2008 book Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar, the film — simply entitled Escobar — will star real-life married couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Vallejo was romantically involved with Escobar, eventually receiving numerous death threats following her exposure of Colombian government corruption. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Escobar will follow the "the rise of Escobar on his way to becoming one of the most powerful drug lords of all time."

If Bardem / Cruz chemistry is the question on your mind, look no further than the Woody Allen late-career classic Vicky Cristina Barcelona — a sexually explorative romantic dramedy also starring Scarlett Johansson.
