Up until now the focus on Southpaw has been about how jacked Jake Gyllenhaal got for the role. But after seeing the first trailer for the film written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, we know that Southpaw will have some serious depth. It's less a fighting film and more of a drama about self-destructive tendencies.

Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, a fighter who wins a title before the death of his wife (Rachel McAdams) sends him into a spiral that loses him his daughter and his top spot in the sport. A washed-up former box named Tick (Forest Whitaker) agrees to train Hope as he fights to win back his daughter and stage a professional comeback.

50 Cent, Naomie Harris, Tyrese Gibson, and Rita Ora also star in the film. And this first trailer features a new song from Eminem

Look out for Southpaw in theaters July 31.
