Sigourney Weaver is a shapeshifter. The sci-fi queen has a number of space sequels on her plate. Just last week, it reported that Weaver will reprise her role as Ripley in the Alien series—when she was still alive in her fully human form, which means sometime after Aliens, but before Alien 3. On top of finishing off Ripley properly, Weaver is signed on for the next three Avatar sequels.  And although everyone loves a Weaver addition to anything (hey there, Cabin the Woods), her continued existence on Pandora doesn't make much sense—because her character died in the first film. But, hey, space is the place where timelines don't have to make sense (hey there, Interstellar).

Director James Cameron said, gruffly, back in 2011, "Here’s the deal. When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!" But Weaver answered more succinctly in 2015 on The Jonathon Ross Show: "I don't play the same character." And that "No," the next film(s) will not take place after the events of the first Avatar.

Weaver also said that Cameron only makes films so he can continue to add technology to his submarine, and venture deeper into deep sea trenches. So, whatever floats his boat; timelines be damned: captain, my captain.
