The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water killed it at the box office this weekend, pulling in a huge $56 million over the weekend to finally push American Sniper ($24.2  million) to No. 2, according to the studios' Sunday morning estimates.

SpongeBob was really the only successful debut over the weekend, as two big-budget sci-fi flicks bombed. The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis made $19 million to land at No. 3 (which wouldn't be terrible if this thing didn't cost an estimated $175 million to make), while Seventh Son, a fantasy with Jeff Bridges, bombed even harder at No. 4 with only $7.1 million.

Both movies got pretty bad reviews, with tomatometer scores of 48 and 51 percent. For the Wachowski brothers, whose Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas were both very expensive disappointments commercially, its simply the latest in a string of bombs.

American Sniper is expected to top $300 million before next weekend.
