"Hot Tub Time Machine" Is Bombing While "Fifty Shades" Dives

"Fifty Shades of Grey" remained in the top spot at the box office, while the "Hot Tub Time Machine" sequel did terrible.

None

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 had  a lukewarm opening weekend at the box office. Actually, it was more like taking a bath in ice water, according to the studios' Sunday morning estimates.

The sequel to the 2010 surprise-hit comedy debuted in seventh place, bringing in only $5.8 million to put it just above another bomb, Jupiter Ascending, which descended to No. 8 with $3.6 million in its second week.  Did people miss John Cusack or something?

Anyway, Hot Tub cost an estimated $14 million to make, while Jupiter cost an estimated $176 million, so it's all relevant.

Fifty Shades of Grey remained in the No. 1 spot, even though it saw a huge decline from its $93 million-plus opening weekend. The movie brought in $23.2 million in its second week, maybe because dudes were not getting dragged along to this one if it wasn't Valentine's Day.

No. 2 was Kingsman: The Secret Service ($17.5 million), followed by The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ($15.5 million), McFarland, USA ($11.3 million) and The DUFF ($11 million).
