When supporting actors take a part in a Terrence Malick film, many of them wonder if they'll make the final cut. The Tree of Life director has notoriously trimmed Adrien Brody from The Thin Red Line and Rachel Weisz, Michael Shannon, and Jessica Chastain from To the Wonder. So when Antonio Banderas herd that he'd appeared in the trailer for Knight of Cups, he was ecstatic. But then the former Mariachi had a new question. Who was he playing?

1.

While chatting with Collider about The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, his interview took a non-SpongeBob turn to Cups, when asked about his character in Malick's upcoming film:

2.

“I don’t know (who I play).  But I am very curious to see what this genius of movies did... I arrived to the set and basically what [Malick] said to me was , ‘Antonio, we didn’t send you a script because we don’t have a script and so this monologue that I gave you,’ which literally didn’t make sense whatsoever, ‘I’m gonna shoot it in nine different locations and I’m gonna just improvise with you, and I’m gonna send you something that I call torpedoes.’  And these torpedoes, they were people that came in the middle of the monologue and started improvising with me.  He sent me a beautiful woman, he sent me an old lady, he sent me a bunch of rappers.  I ended up in a pool with three ladies, [in] my tuxedo.”

Baller.

Knight of Cups makes its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. Said to feature more dialog and structure than Malick's previous To the WonderKnight of Cups concerns a screenwriter (played by Christian Bale), who seems like he has everything. Inside, he's empty, and Cups is his journey of figuring out a way to fill the void.

Despite previously playing The Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, this "knight" is named after a Tarot card who is commonly read as someone who is constantly bored and in need of stimulation. Supposedly, Cups will also star Banderas, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Brian Dennehy, Wes Bentley, Imogene Poots, Teresa Palmer, and Fabio(?!).
