Well, that was fun while it lasted.

After rumors surfaced yesterday that Spider-Man would be appearing in one of the upcoming Avengers sequels (most likely Infinity War: Part 1), Sony moved quickly to squash the rumor before it even had a chance to properly get going. After Comic Book Resources reached out for comment, a Sony Pictures rep responded by saying it was an “old rumor” that had “no validity whatsoever.”

Much like the Aunt May spy movie, it appears that this was perhaps fan speculation run amok. The big difference, of course, was that there was actual evidence here that something might be up; the Sony email leak contained discussions over a Spider-Man appearance in Captain America: Civil War, so they were at least thinking about it at one point.

Just because someone issues a denial, too, doesn’t meant that it won’t happen. With any big surprise crossover in a movie, it’s always a healthy practice to assume the studio is lying until proven otherwise.
