Eddie Murphy is taking a break from his blossoming reggae career to return to where it all began.

The comedian confirmed today that he’ll be returning to Saturday Night Live for their 40th anniversary special, ending a 30 year exile from the show for the former star. Murphy was one of the bright spots when the show struggled in the 1980s, and his Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood sketch was recently voted fans’ favorite skit of the entire decade.

Murphy insisted, though, that it’s merely coincidence that his comeback took so long. “It's just timing,” he said. “It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it … They're actually having a 40th anniversary I think in two weeks. I'm going to that, and that'll be the first time I've been back since I left.”

Regardless of the reasons why he never came back, it’s high time a new generation learned the magic of James Brown in a hot tub.
