Several people fell ill and began vomiting aboard a U.S. Airways flight after what's described as a "strange odor" passed through the plane.

According to NBC News, the plane departed from Ben Gurion airport in Israel on Friday night en route to Philadelphia. However, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome when the smell emerged. Confined to a small space with the odor, passengers and crew started throwing up everywhere. This, of course, only made the plane smell worse.

In total, 14 crew members and two passengers became very ill, including three nurses who had to be hospitalized following the early landing. Others aboard the plane reported suffered from nausea and red eyes.

Per a U.S. Airways spokesperson, an investigation into the odor's origin is underway.
