The days of Lars von Trier pushing the envelope may well be over. He hasn't given an interview since made some very questionable Hitler jokes at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, and apparently has been in recovery for alcoholism. Von Trier told a Danish newspaper that he has been attending AA meetings every day and is approaching 90 days sober.
Von Trier apparently included downing a bottle of vodka a day and drugs as part of his creative process. Artists have been associated with mind-altering substances for centuries, but von Trier said great works have never come from former addicts.
"No creative expression of artistic value has ever been carried out by former alcoholics and drug addicts," he said. Well, let's hope he is wrong.
