The Phoenix Police Department has released the name of the officer who killed unarmed Rumain Brinson last week. Brinson was fatally shot after the officer mistook a bottle of prescription pills for a weapon.

Yesterday, a week after Brinson's killing, the police department released Mark Rine's name. In a statement, Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump explained the decision to disclose the 30-year-old's identity:

It has been seven days since the incident and we didn't want to hold off on releasing the name any longer. He's now had time to mitigate any threats he might receive.

Rine has been relegated to desk duty while an investigation into Brinson's killing is carried out.
