Only hours after the announcement of a Staten Island grand jury's decision not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner, who died after Pantaleo placed him in a chokehold in July, Garner's mother and widow spoke out on live TV.

“Were they looking at the same video the rest of the world was looking at?," Garner's mother Gwen Carr asked host Al Sharpton on MSNBC's Politics Nation. "It was like a modern-day lynching. They had it out for him."

Carr was referring to the widely circulated video that shows Pantaleo using a department-banned chokehold on Garner, in front of other officers, outside a store where the 43-year-old man was selling loose cigarettes.

NBC News confirmed that the Justice Department is opening an investigation into the case following the grand jury's decision, and Garner's widow Esaw Garner told Sharpton she was comforted by speaking with with Attorney General Eric Holder about the case.

"We still have hope and we still have a fight to fight to get this justice for my husband ... He will not die in vain," Esaw Garner said.
