Mike Nichols, who won an Academy Award for directing The Graduate and is a member of the exclusive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winners) club—died suddenly last night of cardiac arrest. He was 83 years old.
Nichols directed a number of well-known films beyond The Graduate, including Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and most recently Charlie Wilson’s War. After earning his name as a comedic performer in the 1950s while also in medical school, Nichols shifted to directing and was an immediate success; Virginia Wolff and The Graduate were his first two films, and from there he'd go on to enjoy a highly-successful 40-plus year run behind the camera.
He is survived by his wife, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, three children, and four grandchildren.
