David Fincher Was Fired From "Alien 3" Twice

Hey, it was his first feature.

20th Century Fox

David Fincher had a little sit down at BAFTA's Life in Pictures this week and looked back on his long and critically acclaimed career. He's known for his dark and intense movies, but you might have forgotten that his feature film debut was actually Alien 3. He was a huge fan of the original, and often cites it as influencing his own work. But the third Alien didn't do so hot at the box office. Fincher says he made the mistake of hiring people the studio wanted, instead of his own friends and colleagues. He was also fired by the studio twice.

It's also not a surprise that the studio didn't want the head-in-the-box moment at the end of Se7en. Fincher was actually accidentally sent the first draft of the script, with that ending, which clinched it for him. When he found out there had been several more drafts without that ending, "I said, ‘No, this is the one.'" Writer Mike DeLuca, then 19, agreed.

Lucky for us, Fincher sticks to his guns when it comes to his films. His latest project, Gone Girl, comes out October 3.
