It seems Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter learned his lesson from his days on The Sopranos.

Asked whether the reaction to The Sopranos’ ending affected how he mapped out the end to Boardwalk Empire—which begins its final season on Sunday—Winter told HitFix’s Alan Sepinwall:

"It didn’t influence me at all. It never would have been my intention to do the same thing anyway. I never thought, ‘Oh, let’s do this or not do that.’ I just took Nucky’s story to the place where I thought it should naturally end up. As it turns out, it’s not ambiguous; it’s pretty much there for you to see. That said, it could have been. I wouldn’t have avoided ambiguity if that’s where I felt the story took us. David gave us absolutely one of the all-time great endings. Certainly, people talk about it every day. So I think it’s apples and oranges."

So, basically what he’s saying is it won’t be a smash cut to black? That should be something of a relief, although it’s hard not to be a little concerned by the phrasing of “pretty much there for you to see.”

Does this quote sound familiar?

“If you look at the final episode really carefully, it’s all there.”

You know who said that? David Chase, right after the finale of The Sopranos. So you’d be forgiven if you continue to be skeptical until you actually see it for yourself.
