After a near-perfect first season, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato has more creative freedom than maybe anyone in the TV business right now, but jeez, he's really putting our faith to the test.

Vince Vaughn, he of Wedding Crashers fame and more recently, horrible movie infamy, is now circling one of the three lead roles for True Detective's much-anticipated second season, according to TVLine. Vaughn, because his last three big roles were Delivery Man (bad), The Internship (worse), and The Watch (okay, we quit), is probably the most shocking name to be seriously linked to the new season. Colin FarrellTaylor Kitsch, and Garrett Hedlund are all reportedly in the mix to join True Detective.

Though maybe we shouldn't hate on this news so much. Vaughn has shown some actual chops in The Cell and the remake of Psycho, and anyone who's seen Swingers or Wedding Crashers knows that he's one of the most magnetic stars on screen when he's at his best.

Also, the reason Matthew McConaughey's performance as Rust Cohle in season one of True Detective was so earth-shattering was that no one expected him to kill it like he did. It was pre-McConassaince, when he was remembered more as the dude in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. So maybe that's exactly what Pizzolato needs—underappreciated, somewhat corny actors—to work his specific brand of magic.

That being said, we hear Owen Wilson is in negotiation to play this season's villain.
