Video showing a South Dakota police officer continuing to use a Taser on a man who has handcuffed and unresponsive has lead to the officer's indictment.
The Raw Story reports that Pine Ridge tribal officer Rebecca Sotherland was indicted yesterday after witnesses filmed her ordering a man to stand up and enter her squad car, despite repeatedly Tasering him on Aug. 15. Furious, the 32-year-old proceeded to shock the man when he was unable to do as she asked.
Bystanders who tried to convince Sotherland to stop Tasering the man eventually placed him in the car themselves. Sotherland was ultimately charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and deprivation of rights under color of law. The FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Office of Justice Services are collaborating on the investigation, and Sotherland faces of maximum of 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine.
