In another troubling, racially-based incident with police, a black Hollywood producer on his way to a pre-Emmys party on Friday was instead detained by Beverly Hills police for six hours after being wrongly accused of participating in a bank robbery nearby. Charles Delk is an accomplished producer for the NAACP Image Awards and several feature films, but on Friday found himself fitting the very loose description of a “tall, bald head, black male.”

It’s a startling reminder that racial profiling and missteps by the police can occur anywhere. While it’s easy to excuse away a city like Ferguson, Mo. as an outlier, when something like this happens in a supposedly “cultured” area of Los Angeles it hammers home the very grave reality that we are not as advanced a society as we’d like to believe.
