So Wait, Does “Gone Girl” Have a New Ending or Not?

Does "Gone Girl" have a new ending or not? David Fincher continues to play coy, and it's utterly infuriating.

Not helpful, David Fincher. Not helpful at all.

The Gone Girl director—who has previously alluded to a new ending for the film compared with Gillian Flynn’s original novel—has once again thrown everything into confusion with his latest comments about the end of the film. After Flynn had called reports of potential changes “exaggerated” in April, EW once again asked Fincher about the ending in their upcoming fall preview issue.

Here’s what he said when asked about what has been changed between the book and the movie:

“Everything and nothing. You're not changing the marrow of the creature, you're just changing the bone structure and the muscles and the skin. And the hair. It’s all of its outer sheathing. But at its core, it's exactly what I think Gillian always intended.”

So, basically, nothing is clear. While his answer would seem to suggest that the fundamental structure and ending of the story is the same, the way we’ll get there is a bit different. But who knows, really; after all, this is the same guy who put Gwyneth Paltrow’s head in a box.
