It's silent on the Matador set. That is, until you hear "GOOOAAALLLL!" Sitting in the back of video village (the fancy way of describing the area of chairs and TV equipment where the crew can watch a scene break down), Gabriel Luna, the star of the new El Rey network series, is streaming the Argentina vs. Nigeria World Cup match via the Univision app on his phone. It's a fitting scene to witness, considering the show is 50% soccer. On the Robert Rodriguez-produced series, Luna plays Tony "Matador" Bravo, a former low-level DEA agent who's recruited by the C.I.A. to infiltrate MLS soccer team, the L.A. Riot, only to become its star player. His mission: take down team owner/crime lord Andres Galan, played by the incomparable chameleon Alfred Molina

Despite all of the bloody chase sequences, fistfights, and gunslinging in the pilot, which premieres tonight, the scene shooting today is quiet. Set in Galan's office, atop the L.A. Riot stadium—IRL, it's a room in a nondescript studio in the middle of Van Nuys—Galan and Bravo have a stare down of sorts, chock full of intrigue. It's the kind of scene you might expect would end with someone drawing a weapon. It doesn't, but the tension is enough to burst the room's fake glass windows. It's actually a perfect encapsulation of the show. For all its obvious explosions, Matador is most compelling when it doesn't blow up spell everything out for the viewer, leaving them to read the icy cold looks and guess at the words that go unsaid.

Rounding out the main cast are Nicky Whelan as C.I.A. operative Annie Mason, Neil Hopkins, who plays her colleague Noah Peacott, and the comedic relief of the group, Tanc Sade as Alec Holester, a striker for the L.A. Riot. But it's only Luna and Molina on set today, and Complex got the chance to speak to them both about signing onto the suspenseful new series.
