Late last year Buffalo, New York game collector Michael Thommason made it into the Guinness Book of World Records with the world's largest video game collection. Now he's auctioning off the collection, and the record, which stands at over 12,000 strong.

Along with the games the winner will also receive the Guinness record and some other gaming memorabilia such as the first copy of Retro Magazine.

Thommason collected the games working in game retailers and owning a series of independent video game stores over the past 30 years. As to why he's selling off the collection, he says that it's simply a result of family that could use the cash. “While I do not wish to part with these games,” Thommason said, “I have responsibilities that I have made to others and this auction is how I will help meet them.”

That leaves the door open to you! Got over $50,000 laying around? You too could be in competition to win the GameGavel auction and land yourself a Guinness record.
