This morning Feedly -- one of the most popular RSS readers in the world -- was hit by a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack crippling its website and leaving users with time out error pages instead of feeds of their favorite websites. The attack, which is chronicled on the Feedly blog, comes right on the heels of a similar attack last night to popular note-taking app Evernote. The reason? Money, of course.

DDoS attacks occur when someone tries to make a website or service unavailable by flooding it with traffic/data until it buckles under the weight of the requests. Just this year Meetup.com fell victim to a DDoS attack in which those responsible bombarded the site with 8.2 gigabits of data while trying to extort the company's CEO for $300 USD. That's right, they took down a site with tens of millions of users for the chance to earn literally hundreds of dollars.
Feedly's blog says they're currently working hard to make changes to their infrastructure and hope to be back online in a few hours. Hopefully for us they'll just cough up the 300 bucks so we can read our favorite sites again.
