While we impatiently wait for the sequel to The Girl Who Played With Fire, Deadline is reporting that director David Fincher and star Rooney Mara are possibly attached to the adaptation of the spy book Red Sparrow, currently being written by American Hustle author Eric Warren Singer.

This would be the plot, per deadline:

“The story is set in present-day Russia, and Mara would play Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova, who struggles to survive in the post-Soviet intelligence jungle. Ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the art of ‘sexpionage,’ Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a young CIA officer who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole.

We have no doubt that Fincher would take the “sexpionage” and make it super dark and creepy, because that’s just what he does. And really, we’re OK with it.

It sounds like this movie is going to be fast-tracked even though it hasn’t even been written yet, so we’ll likely get to see some Rooney Mara spy seduction on the screen long before we revisit Lisbeth and Mikael’s super weird romance.

Either way, expect a lot of brooding.
