Hundreds of people in slasher flicks would have been saved thanks to this feature.
Starting today, residents in select cities can text "911" during an emergency. The feature has been in the works since 2012, and is only for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobilecustomers, for now. The process is simple: just text 911, and give them the information you normally would in an emergency. Since they can't pinpoint where a text is coming from as they can with a call, you have to include the exact address of your location. While it's not available in all cities and states right now, the FCC is pushing to get text-to-911 going in every city by the end of the year.
