Here's the premiere trailer for Jeremy Renner's "Kill the Messenger," based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb.

The debut trailer has dropped for Jeremy Renner’s next movie, Kill the Messenger. Based on a true story, Renner stars as Gary Webb, a journalist who discovers that the CIA was involved in smuggling cocaine into the United States in the 1980s. His piece “Dark Alliance,” published in the San Jose Mercury Newsin 1996, immediately created a firestorm of controversy in the media and a host of problems for Webb personally.

What makes Kill the Messenger unique is that instead of some sinister criminal organization threatening the guy trying to do the right thing, the US government seems to be the chief antagonist. The scope of the movie will cover the investigation and publishing of the story, and the smear campaign that followed.

Here’s a first look at the film, which is due out on October 10:
