The claims of a scientist and reknowned alcohol expert are good news for all frequent wine guzzlers: a bottle a day is not bad for you.
Dr. Kari Poikolainen has authored a book highlighting alcohol's health benefits, and the former World Health Organization member said what some drinkers have been saying for years: "The weight of the evidence shows moderate drinking is better than abstaining and heavy drinking is worse than abstaining—however the moderate amounts can be higher than the guidelines say."
According to Poikolainen, drinking only becomes problematic when intake reaches around 13 units per day. A bottle of wine usually contains about 10, hence his theory. While others might dispute that light drinking is better than flat out abstinence, the best course of action seems to be drinking reasonably and responsibly. That is, if you choose to indulge at all.
