Mitch Hurwitz, the man behind Arrested Development, has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to create and produce new original series for the streaming service, according to Deadline. In addition to developing projects of his own, he will also serve as a consultant with Netflix on various comedy series in development.

“We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer. “Mitch’s inventive approach to Arrested Development — one of the top TV comedies of this generation — was ahead of its time, and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”

This is just another sign that Netflix is aggressively pursuing more original content for its streaming customers.

Hurwitz described the Netflix process as being, “the best professional experience of my life, even topping some of my favorite unprofessional experiences.” He continued, “It is incredibly inspiring to get to produce for Netflix, a company that not only doesn’t resist change but is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone in forging it. The fact that I’m also getting one month of their streaming right to my TV or Xbox free … well, it really takes the sting out of buying that Xbox.”

To have one of the premier names in comedy signed to your network in such a broad capacity is a huge deal for Netflix. Expect more news on what Hurwitz actually has planned in the coming months.
