On this day 75 years ago, the legendary Marvin Gaye was born. What would've been his 75th birthday comes a day after the 30th anniversary of his tragic murder. Marvin (2007 14th St. NW), the Belgian-influenced restaurant inspired by Gaye's Belgin exile, will host its annual birthday celebration for him in his native D.C. today, but this year's celebration will be special due to the magnitude.
There will be live music from Gaye's original band, the Marquees, as well as performances by Maimouna Youssef and Martin Luther. Gaye's music director, Gordon "Guitar" Banks, the Savoy-Ellingtons and U.S. Royalty will also join several other local acts. Som Records vinyl shop will also host a Hitsville U.S.A.-inspired pop-up shop on site selling Motown classics from the 1960s to the 1980s from 4 p.m. until the event ends.
The event starts at 4 p.m. and all proceeds will be forwarded to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in Gaye's name. Enjoy the fun, just don't call it "Marvin's," per the owner.
