The Last of Us has some of the most engaging and knuckle-biting writing of any game in recent memory. Original writer Neil Druckman will try to tap that magic again for a feature length film to be produced my Sam Raimi's studio, Ghost House Pictures.

Distributor Screen Gems says that “the quality of the storytelling” is the reason for picking up the project. So what will the movie be about? Prequel? Check out the press release:

The rich and visceral story of The Last of Us[...] follows hardened survivor, Joel, and Ellie, a young and capable girl, on their journey through a radically transformed world. Set twenty years after an infectious pandemic spread by the cordyceps virus ravaged the course of humanity, these two people, who were brought together by chance, must make life-altering decisions in order to survive. The Last of Us explores themes of survival, loyalty, love, and redemption in an emotionally charged expedition across a post-epidemic United States.

Besides the fact that cordyceps are not a virus it sounds like everything will focus on the events in the original game. Maybe Ellen Page can finally get cast after accusing developers of stealing her likeness rights before the game came out. After Beyond Two Souls Page should probably stay away from video games for awhile.

What do you think? What's your dream scenario for a The Last of Us movie? Dream casting?
