The long-rumored Splinter Cell adaptation just got a bit more credibility as Deadline is reporting that Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) has been hired to direct the highly-anticipated video game film. According to the article, Liman will be working with Tom Hardy in the movie, who has been signed on to play the lead role of superspy Sam Fisher.

The Splinter Cell video game series consists of six installments, all of which star Fisher as a spy for the NSA sub-division known as the “Third Echelon.” Liman, of course, is no stranger to the spy genre, having directed The Bourne Identity in 2002. Splinter Cell is shaping up to be the rare video game adaptation with legitimate talent attached both in front of the camera and behind it.
