After grossing more than $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office, a sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar was all but inevitable. But despite the follow-up being one of the most anticipated movies in recent memory, any actual information about it has been hard to come by. Thankfully Cameron opened up a bit recently during an interview with RTL (via /Film), and described where he is in the production process:

Cameron also hints that he might introduce a higher frame-rate for this sequel, much like Peter Jackson did for his Hobbit movies. With a movie this size and a director this ambitious, the pre-production on Avatar 2 far exceeds most other blockbusters, so fans should get ready to be in the dark about details for another few years.
Still, with the advanced technology available to him, Cameron says the whole process should go much smoother:
