The ratings, on the other hand, were just OK.

More proof that lackluster ratings don't exactly always equal a lack of viewership: According to Deadline, Tuesday night's winter debut of Pretty Little Liars scored big time on Twitter, and quickly broke the record for the most-tweeted about season premiere in television history. If you don't recall, that's way more than the first premiere of Syfy's Sharknado garnered this past summer, and way way more than the red wedding episode of Game of Thrones this past year.

So, how many tweets does it take to break the record for most-tweeted about season premiere ever? Apparently as the episode aired on Tuesday, it amassed a total of 1.3 million tweets from 700,000 unique visitors, and at one point averaged a whopping 30,000 tweets a minute. This isn't much of a surprise if you look at the show's history with Twitter—last year, it consistently managed to break 1 million tweets per episode, and its episodes currently make up the top five most-tweeted about telecasts on record—but it's still an amazing accomplishment.

Interestingly, the ratings don't quite reflect this Twitter win: Though the episode was Tuesday's second best telecast for cable (BET's Being Mary Jane ended up winning the night), it pulled in 3.2 million total viewers, fairly average numbers. Of course, it's likely this will go up after DVR and VOD platform viewings are factored in.

Pretty Little Liars airs on ABC Family on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. EST.
