Square Enix is moving to squash rumors that the Hitman series has been canned after reports revealed yesterday that one big budget Hitman game had been canceled before it was even announced.

However Square Enix revealed today that developer IO Interactive is still hard at work on a next-generation console Hitman game.

"There's a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion," a spokesperson from Square Enix Eurogamer.

"IO Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles."

While IO is working on a big next-gen Hitman title Square Enix Montreal is working on a mobile game in the series. "Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise," the publisher said.

So rest assured lovers of bald-headed murders, Agent 47 will live to fight another day.
