Bad news for The X Factor: According to The Hollywood Reporter, ratings for last night's season finale were way down, with only a total of 6.2 million people tuning in—not to mention, the series saw a 45 percent drop in viewership compared to 2012. Yikes.

From THR:

None

These numbers wouldn't be terrible for another show, but for something like The X Factor on a network like Fox, they're pretty bad—especially considering there was a time creator Simon Cowell predicted the series would pull in 20 million viewers with no problem.

For some context: Last year's season two finale, which aired on December 20th, 2012, pulled in a total of 9.66 million viewers. The season one finale before that, in 2011, pulled in 12.59 million viewers.

Cowell, is, of course, freaking out over the numbers, and has promised on his Twitter that the "rules" will be changing next year to shake things up:

Whether or not that will be enough to save the series remains to be seen.
