Bad news for Californication fans: According to TVLine, Showtime announced today their plans to end the long-running series after its seventh season, which is set to premiere next year.

In a statement, Showtime revealed that the final 12 episodes of the series will "wrap the storylines" of Hank Moody (David Duchovny), Karen (Natasha McElhone), Charlie (Evan Handler) and Marcy (Pamela Adlon).

"With its unique blend of lyricism and excess, Californication has been one of our groundbreaking signature series," Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins said in a statement. "We will always be indebted to Tom Kapinos for leading the creative charge on this memorable comedy, and to David Duchovny for making us root for an unapologetic hedonist like Hank Moody."

The series has won numerous awards, including two Emmys and one Golden Globe.

As sad as it is to see this show go, gotta admit: It was its time. The series has grown pretty stale over the past two seasons, and it easily could have ended at the close of season four—episodes weren't exactly unwatchable after that point, but they lacked the same brilliance found in earlier seasons.

Californication will return for its seventh, and now final, season in April 2014.
